It’s been a while, sorry about that! It’s been the most hectic of years, and I’m slowly crawling out of the hellscape I created for myself and finding that I’m a little (well a lot) burnt out. I’ve had zero headspace to communicate with my friends and family, let alone write a newsletter. But I am here, I’ve mostly cleared my slate, and I’ve made my life a little easier for myself going forward so hopefully I’ll be able to say hi more
What have I been up to?
I’ve been working on a feature film in the US (but working remotely) as a visual development artist since my return from Tokyo (my last post here) which has been so great. Unfortunately, as the crazy freelancer I am, I still had a lot of other projects to tie up when I joined the film. Finally, I am SOLELY working on the film for a while, and it’s nice to be a more normal human who has one job. That being said I got to illustrate a lot of great book covers this year and illustrate a lovely picture book that will be out next year, I believe. I have a few more jobs coming up, a gallery piece and maybe another book once I get my act together, but I’m rather enjoying some peace and quiet.
Here is some work on a cover for Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo. Above, a cover for The Lovely Dark by Matthew Fox.
I also got to do a print for the lovely folks at Spoke Art for their Anime in LA show, I did a poster for Suzume that had AR effect when a QR code was scanned.
The large print is sold out, but some smaller ones are still available here to buy: https://spoke-art.com/products/izzy-burton-suzume-print
YAY LA - Lightbox 27-29th October
I’m super excited that this time in 2 weeks I will be swanning around LA trying to get over my jetlag in preparation for Lightbox Expo in Pasadena. I am so psyched that I have a table for Lightbox and that it will be my first time tabling EVER and selling my products to IRL people. In fact, I had to create a whole slate of products because I just don’t do merch normally. I’ll have pins, stickers, an art book, prints and even my AP copies of my Suzume print above. I’m BEYOND excited to meet my US work colleagues, past and present, and all my internet art friends. If you’re going, please stop by and say hi - I look forward to chatting to you all :)
I’ll be at Table 436
I’m hoping I sell everything at the Expo, but if not look out for a future newsletter with info on getting your hands on leftovers.
Short film funding woes
I’m still trying to get my short film “Magpie” funded. We’re on the 3rd or 4th round of seeking funding, each time getting so excruciatingly close. This film is demanding to be made, it keeps bubbling up into my mind and I find myself daydreaming about the different shots. I hope I get to share it with you one day. If anyone has any other routes to get funding, please do email me and share. I’d love to find a way to get this film made and any help is appreciated.
As my slate clears I’m hoping I’ll get time to continue writing my novel and also creating some pitch work for a graphic novel my literary agents and I are working on. All very exciting, but all just bubbling away quietly for now.
That’s it. I hope you’re all well and relaxing more than I have been.
See you soon x
