Hey folks, just a quick one today.
Last night Manchester Animation Festival launched the poster I created for this year’s festival. It was lovely to be asked to create the poster artwork (one sheet variant still to come) and what’s exciting is there’s a 30-second animated sting coming soon that will play before each screening at the festival. (Big shout out to my old boss Tom from Blue Zoo for suggesting me to the MAF folks - it’s always lovely to have people in your corner).
The scary thing is I’m creating the animated sting entirely myself. ENTIRELY. RIGHT AS WE SPEAK. That’s backgrounds, comp, animation, editing, sound editing - the whole shebang. Most of those jobs I’m really happy and competent (to some degree) in, but I’m not really an animator. I’m okay with simple effects animation, but you’ll see I’ve designed my Bee character to be an elongated sphere with stick legs in the hope he won’t be impossible to animate. Also, there’s a TONNE of flowers to animate blooming - sheeeeesssh. WISH ME LUCK - if you see any swearing on my Instagram stories in the next month you’ll know I’m struggling ahah.
Check out their website to see my little bee guy there too :D
Hope you’re all well, thanks for joining the newsletter - it feels nice to chat into a void and know someone is picking it up on the other end. I can’t wait to show you this final animation and keeping my fingers crossed I get some sleep soon because this insomnia is making me feel like these folks I spotted in Copenhagen last November:
In other news, I had an epiphany this week that all my work/stories are linked by one theme: loneliness. It seems to be my “thing”. I know that probably says quite a lot about who I am. Anyway, that’s all for now.
Loved to read this! And good luck animating and finding sleep!

My first ever read on substack? Might have just stumbled upon a gem.
