It’s October, I’m tired and I have a bad cold - seems about right! BUT, I just spent a glorious Autumnal week in New York prancing around and wanted to share some photos.
Yes I draw things, but I’ve always loved photography … I’m still very much just an amateur but it was nice to wander around New York and try to capture some of the feeling of the place. Fun fact: I lived nearby in Connecticut when I was a kid.
Here’s a photo of me up the Empire State building in 1997 :
For those that want to know, my camera is a Canon 6D Mark ii with a Cinebloom 20% filter on - that’s how I’m getting that lovely bloom and vintage faded feel. I also edit a fair bit in Lightroom.
We were in New York primarily for Comic Con, though it was much more of a holiday in the end. Matt, my very talented other-half, had a few bits going on at Comic Con including a screening of Akira that he’d created the poster for - you can check his newsletter update about that poster and where to buy it when it goes on sale online TODAY : CLICK HERE FOR ALL THINGS MATT.
It was super fun being a guest in the world of comics and posters. I met a tonne of Matt’s art friends on his side of the creative industry who are all the most talented people and we all hung out at dinners and drinks and it was just really inspiring. One friend of Matt even gave us free converses and I was desperately in need of some new converses so it was great ahaha. Here’s a few great things I got:
An artbook from Tula Lotay , a print from Steph C and a print from Natalie Andrewson.
A pin from Jason Edmiston, a key change from Kuru 731 and a pin from the Spoke Art booth by Scott C.
On that note, a huge thanks to the amazing folks at Spoke Art who facilitated us being there at the Con and looked after us all so well.
I’ve so many more photos I could share but I don’t want to bombard you all when you’re here for art and animation.
I’ll leave you with a few tips from the trip!
Eat Pizza at John’s on Bleecker Street - I always do and it’s always good.
Visit the Bode store on Hester Street - Bode is my all-time favourite designer and the folks that work there are so nice. Matt bought an awesome 1 of 37 skeleton tee and I was really jealous ahaha.
After exploring Brooklyn we were starting to think about how to head home, and realised we were right by the ferry port and hopped on a ferry to cross back to Manhattan - it was only $4 each and gives you an awesome view of the city from the water.
We ate bagels most days from a place called Pio’s Bagels and they were excellent.
Walk! Even on the rainy days - especially on the rainy days really - the city kinda comes alive with all the steam from the subway and all those reflections. My best photos come from places we accidentally walked past.
Hope you’re all well x
